CBD and COVID-19: What We Have So Far

Last updated on

Just over 100 years ago, the world faced another pandemic that wasn’t totally unlike the current COVID-19 pandemic. More than half a million people were infected with the Spanish flu. It ultimately claimed the lives of 675,000 Americans and more than 50 million people all over the world.

To date, coronavirus, or COVID-19, has infected more than 2.4 million.

There have been all kinds of “cures” touted for COVID-19, from saltwater to ultraviolet light – even taking high doses of vitamin C. But could cannabis, and particularly CBD, potentially play a role in curing COVID-19?

Here’s what you need to know.

CBD Can Reduce Inflammation

Multiple studies have linked CBD to the ability to reduce inflammation, among its other benefits like pain relief, as explained in this article.

Although the jury’s still out on whether reduced inflammation as a result of CBD consumption can help prevent you from getting sick, some studies suggest that CBD’s adaptive abilities may be able to keep you healthier for longer.

Although most studies, to date, have only been carried out on mice, the current data suggest that CBD can reduce the effects of exaggerated inflammation.

There is some Venice adding support to the theory that CBD might help heal some of the severe lung inflammation caused by serious cases of COVID-19. While there is a need for more research, CBD could emerge as a viable treatment option.

COVID-19’s Impact on the CBD Industry

Like all other industries, the CBD industry has not been left untouched by COVID-19. Hemp production has not declined, and while many companies have wasted zero time in making their own unsubstantiated claims related to COVID-19, the FDA has ramped up its enforcement of such loosely-supported claims.

The CBD industry, fortunately, is continuing to grow just as it did before the crisis. Hemp production is one of the few industries around the world that remains untouched. It is largely supported by increased demand and growing federal and statewide support.

Other CBD and COVID-19 News

Although CBD might not be the snake oil cure that you might expect as it relates to COVID-19. The fact of the matter is that more consumers are relying on CBD to help get them through these stressful times.

And it makes sense as to why, too. CBD has long been touted as a treatment for anxiety and depression – and what’s more anxiety-producing than a global pandemic?

If you’re considering trying CBD to reduce your anxiety related to COVID-19, make sure you check in with a qualified health professional first. And don’t buy into the claims that CBD can prevent COVID-19.

There hasn’t been enough research to substantiate such claims. So you’re better off sticking to trie-dans-true preventative measures like handwashing and social distancing.
