Marijuana as Treatment for Kidney Stones

Last updated on

Kidney stones can cause excruciating pain in your body. A lot of men and women suffer from this and more and more people get affected by it each year due to our diets.

Research says that 1 out of 10 Americans will experience having a kidney stone in their lifetime and each year, more than half a million visit hospitals due to kidney stone problems.

With this in mind, some patients opt to use Marijuana for kidney stone treatment. There are several medical benefits of marijuana, but the recent buzz in the alternative medicine field is that Medical Marijuana treats kidney stones.

However, how effective can it be?

All You Need to Know About Kidney Stones

First, what are kidney stones?

They form when there is an abundance of crystal-forming substances like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid.

They become solid when the fluid in the urine can’t dilute it anymore. They could also form if the urine doesn’t have enough substances to keep these crystals from sticking to one another.

Some major causes are:

  • Dehydration
  • High sodium diets
  • Poor quality of lifestyle

Some symptoms include the following:

  • Severe pain in the back, ribs, groin, or lower abdomen
  • Urine’s appearance appear cloudy, pink, brown, or red
  • Higher frequency of peeing
  • Nausea.

If you are suffering from these symptoms, approach your doctor for a proper consultation.

These form within the urinary tract and kidney, and there are many types of stones. Patients who suffer from this, experience a lot of pain to the point where they aren’t able to stand straight.

They also experience high levels of pain while peeing, and it’s sometimes accompanied by fevers, chills, and nausea.

While these do not cause permanent damage, if the condition gets bad enough, you might be required to go under surgery.

How Marijuana Treats Kidney Stones

Most of the time people opt for the simple solution of letting the stones pass through the urinary tract and with a lot of water. In more serious cases surgery is an option.

Other than that there have been many reports that show people have treated the condition with “home remedies”.

Then there are others who will vouch that Marijuana treats kidney stones. While albeit unconventional, medical professionals who prescribe medical cannabis have used the herb for the treatment of kidney stones.

Pain &  Nausea Management

Most patients who suffer from kidney stones experience back pain, and medical cannabis comes into play due to its pain relieving properties. Additionally, the herb can help combat other symptoms and manifestations like nausea.

According to Aden Patrick of San Francisco Medical Marijuana, patients who get administered the drug for kidney stones don’t suffer from harsh side effects.

As mentioned, a lot of patients opt for home or natural remedies. Marijuana treats kidney stones because the herb is an analgesic, and it combats pain like an aspirin would.

The muscle-relaxant properties are exactly what the strained urinary tubes need. The fewer spasms, the less pain experienced by the patient.

Testimonials from Patients

There are a lot of Cannabis-centric forums that talk about how Marijuana treats kidney stones. A good number of users online said that Cannabis has helped them with their condition, but mainly for pain management.

The same users also mention that they consume huge amounts of water while they used the herb for medication.

While there is no research yet that directly correlates the treatment of kidney stones and Marijuana use, users who have treated their condition through this method cannot deny the results. User jezzbel posted on Grass City forums saying:

Not only did it help with the pain (and help me prove to myself that I wasn’t a pill junky!), it also drastically reduced the amount of stones that I have had. Within a year of managing my almost daily pain with marijuana, my stones started slowing down. Now I typically pass 2 or 3 a year, and the last IVP I had showed 4 stones between the two kidneys. I know that people could argue that other factors could have been at play, but it is hard to deny that there is a connection.”

Another user Renity also had good things to say about the herb as treatment. She called weed a “lifesaver,” and my pain is numbed, my nausea is under control, and I even have a bit of my appetite back. Needless to say, I’ll be up all night with my smoke while trying to get rid of this thing.”

No proven therapeutic effects, but still worth a try

There is no one size fits all treatment when it comes to kidney stones, but given the properties of Marijuana, you can still give it a try.

A lot of people highly recommend using the drug, while there are still others who also say that it doesn’t really have much of an effect at all.

There are medical professionals who prescribe medical cannabis for their patients, and it is best to consult with them if you are entertaining the concept of using the herb for kidney stone treatment.

  1. I’ve been up with pain for the past few hours. It has felt like somebody digging their knuckle into my kidney hard… this is only the second time this has happened to me… hard to sit still had to move around.. Broke out into a hard sweat and vomited heavil. The pain finally subsided enough when I tried to pee but only a trickle came out. Which is how this started, got up to pee for a second time in the night in as little as 30 minutes and my stream went to a small small stream which was weird and that is when the pain started…. eventually I was able to run a hot bath and sit in it and my wife gave me my herb (which I use for anxiety etc). I feel a lot better and I do hope it is the herb helping. I even feel a little hungry.

  2. Thanks, this is very informative. I decided to reduce my CBD oil usage for anxiety (medically prescribed), but at around the same time I did that I started getting more kidney stone pain to the point where I went through a large bottle of Advil in about a month. I thought the stones were due to an excess of Christmas cake and booze but your article (and similar ones I’ve found online) turned the key for me. I’m not 100% sure about this, but I did have stones before weaning myself off the CBD oil, though they were much more manageable. Resuming usage seems to be working.
