What is Hair Follicle Testing?
Hair follicle testing is a laboratory method of testing for drugs using hair as a testing sample. This method screens your hair for drug use, or misuse of prescription medication, by detecting traces of illicit substances in your hair strands.
It’s quite an expensive procedure when compared to urinalysis. However, its high accuracy and the long detection window of up to 90 days, justify its steep price.

A lab technician almost always does hair sample collection by cutting the hair directly from your head and preventing you from tampering with the sample.

How Do Hair Tests Work?
To make the sample, the lab technician has to cut a sample of your hair. They cut the lock of your hair at the scalp, usually about an inch and a half long.

After washing, your hair is diluted to form a solution suitable for further analysis. Hair follicle testing includes two analytical methods: the detection test and the confirmatory test.
The first testing method uses immunoassays to determine the presence of drugs. You’re most likely familiar with this testing method, as it is essentially the same analytical method used with at-home urine drug test strips.
If the first test detects the presence of drugs or other substances, the sample is then submitted to further analysis.
The second test or the confirmation test uses gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine the concentration of drugs in the solution.
If the concentration levels exceed the specific cutoff values for certain drugs, your sample is positive, and you’ve successfully failed a drug test.
But if the concentration levels fall short of cutoff values, the results are negative, and you’ve passed a drug test. In that case, the results of the first test are ruled out as false positives.
As you can see, there’s not much room for sample “correction,” when it comes to hair follicle testing. But you can tamper with the hair before you come to the lab and submit a sample for testing.
