The cannabis market is one that has skyrocketed over the last few years. With more and more states legalizing the use of this medical drug, many manufacturing facilities are producing it.
Here are some things that you likely didn’t even know about how cannabis is grown and harvested for consumers.
It Takes Around Five Months to Grow Cannabis
While there are many different growth schedules for different types of crops, cannabis reigns in around the five-month mark. Depending on the growing conditions, some strains can be harvested around three months.
Apart from the growth cycle, it takes an additional three weeks to fully harvest and cure the buds for use. That means that it takes around six months for a full batch of cannabis to be produced.
It Requires Lots of Water to Grow
Marijuana takes a lot of water to grow to its fullest potential. In fact, California has reported using over 60 million gallons of water to grow its cannabis crops.
Many growers are looking for resources to help supply their crops with water. A wastewater treatment system is one of the most common resources as growers can reuse water for their plants.
Pistils Show When Plants Are Ripe
When it comes to growing marijuana, the most important part is understanding just when it needs to be harvested.
If you look at the leafy part of the cannabis plant, you’ll see pistils. These are common in many types of vegetation. They’re described as white hairs that stick out from the leaves. As the plant grows, the pistils will turn from bright white to a brownish amber color. When about 80 percent of the plant’s pistils have turned their new color, it’s time to harvest.
Drying is the Key to A Quality Product
In order for marijuana to be completely harvested correctly, it must be well-dried. Growers will take the plants and hang them up for at least a full week. This is done in rooms that have a temperature of around 65 degrees.
It’s best to remove the big fanny leaves from the plant so that it dries faster. When handling the plant, be sure that you don’t touch the buds. Every time you touch the bud a little bit of THC will get stuck to your fingers.
Growing cannabis isn’t anything new. In fact, people have been doing it for centuries. As it becomes legalized throughout the United States, more and more people are indulging in its benefits.
If you’re considering growing your own plants, be sure to do the research as it will make or break your harvest.
