The side effects of CBD: myth or reality?

Last updated on

The use of CBD is now part of many therapeutic protocols around the world. It is therefore crucial to ask about the possible side effects of CBD.

The possible side effects of CBD

The effects of CBD are very slight. Some of them may occur in case of overdose, contraindication or drug interaction. Here are the most common and minor side effects that occur over a short period of time.

Dry Mouth

Taking CBD, especially by smoking CBD flowers, can have a particular side effect: dry mouth, also called xerostomia. Indeed, CBD can interact with the salivary glands and cause this effect of temporary dehydration, just drink a glass of water to eliminate it. Taking CBD orally or sublingually causes little or no such discomfort.

Drowsiness

CBD or cannabidiol can cause drowsiness as it is used as a relaxant. It can be problematic during a particular activity like driving or working. It is mainly a matter of dosage, you will have to lower your doses of CBD to not feel the drowsy effect anymore.

Gastrointestinal Problems

This is one of the rarest side effects that is rather difficult to pinpoint as it is generated by multiple factors. However, users with sensitive bowels claim that CBD can improve stomach aches or symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Loss of Appetite

CBD has a regulating effect on the feeling of hunger, unlike THC, which is known for its numerous cravings. Taking CBD leads to a decrease in the production of ghrelin, a digestive hormone. The level of ghrelin is very high when you are hungry and vice versa when you have eaten. It is therefore advisable to take your dose of CBD away from meal times so as not to experience a loss of appetite.

Fatigue

Taking CBD allows you to relax and rest physically and emotionally. It can induce fatigue at the beginning of your treatment but allows you to regain energy over the long term.

CBD and Cancer treatments

Nausea

Nausea when taking CBD is quite rare and is mostly due to overdosing. CBD is well known for its anti-nausea effects, especially during heavy treatments such as chemotherapy. We advise you to reduce your CBD dose to avoid this side effect.

CBD and contraindications

The contraindications to the use of CBD are few but important to know:

Pregnant or breastfeeding women: There is little scientific analysis on the subject, so it is recommended to avoid CBD as a precautionary measure.

Allergic people: it is possible to be allergic to hemp! Hemp is a plant that produces pollen like any other. The risk is very low, but for people with an important allergic ground, it is advised to avoid it. Allergic reactions are however mild, and comparable to seasonal allergies.

Patients undergoing medical treatment: there is a risk of drug interactions with CBD, especially when taken orally or sublingually. If CBD modifies the treatment, this can have dangerous consequences. It is imperative that you talk to your doctor.
