There are numerous medical breakthroughs related to the use of marijuana to treat illnesses on human beings. It has been known to relieve pain, improve appetite and provide an overall sense of well-being.
Though lesser in numbers, same reports have been made regarding its benefits on pets. Marijuana is now an emerging trend in the treatment of pain, anxiety, allergies and other diseases of our furry friends.
Does this mean that we can now smoke weed and eat edibles with our pets?
The answer is NO.
Human beings have a different biological composition as with animals. Hence, it is never a good idea to give them whatever you are having.
You have to note that Marijuana and CBD are two related but different things. Marijuana is the totality of the plant that contains CBD, THC and many other compounds. CBD is the component known to have positive effects on humans and animals while THC is the compound associated with the psychoactive effect of the plant.
So you see? It is never a good idea to puff a smoke or two directly to your pets. God forbid, you let them have a bite of your space cake too!
Apart from the psychoactive effects, this act can do numerous harm to your beloved animals. Smoking, may it be cigarette, tobacco or weed, should not be done in close proximity to your pets. Their lungs are sensitive and could harbor a lot of harmful chemicals that could be potentially fatal to them.
Not to mention that human grade marijuana is too much in quantity for their little bodies to handle. When smoking marijuana, it is best to do it outside, away from your pets or with windows wide open.

CBD Tincture
CBD Tinctures are an oil-based mixture of CBD compounds with either vegetable oil, glycerin oil or alcohol. It comes in bottles with droppers to be administered orally.
It is usually placed under the tongue for easy absorption and immediate relief as it goes directly to the bloodstream. CBD is best absorbed when placed directly to your pets’ oral mucosa.
This is the route recommended for acute pain or as part of daily dietary supplement as it has moderate to low CBD potency. This route of administration provides owners control on how much CBD they would want to give their pets.

CBD Edibles
If you have elusive pets who make it seem impossible to give CBD tincture, then CBD edibles are the way to go. It is given as treats to dogs and cats with its many flavors and shapes to choose from.
When giving medication to your pets, the best way is the one that does not hurt them. This may be particularly tricky especially for pets with depression.
One symptom of cat depression is sudden aggression. If this happens, it can be challenging to feed them even more so to have them take medications. CBD treats can be a good way to do both.
It is administered orally which makes it longer to absorb. And since it has to undergo the digestive process, it provides varying potency for CBD. The risk in giving CBD through this route is over-consumption.
The tendency of many pet owners is to give more than what is intended because of the lack of immediate effect. They would assume that it is not working so they give more. This should not be the case. You should stick to the recommended dosage guidelines to avoid toxicity.

Although topicals need to be heavily applied for it to reach its desired effect, it allows the CBD to focus on the area where it is needed. This route is recommended for pets with skin allergies, inflammation, and joint pains that requires constant application throughout the day.
There is none to little toxicity where topicals are concerned, thus, re-application can be done as needed. You do not need to worry about your pets getting high. There is no risk to that since CBD is administered through the skin.
Whatever way you decide on, think of the one that is most beneficial and convenient for your pets. After all, these lovable creatures are counting on you to make the best decision for them.
